If you're not part of Scouting in Shropshire we probably won't be able to take you caving, however there are many other Scout caving teams in the UK. All adults in Scouting can search on the Compass database for leaders with caving or mine exploration permits.
If you're not involved in Scouting at all but still fancy caving there are loads of university and members clubs too. You can find most listed on a great website, https://newtocaving.com
This is our current programme of event.
Click on an event in the calendar for more details, if we are taking bookings we'll put a link to a booking site. This just registers your interest, you'll need to return a permission form and pay a deposit to finalise your place.
If you have any questions feel free to contact us via the website or directly through Scouting.
Shropshire’s Cavers badge courses are held over three days.
The courses are open to Scouts over 12 years old and we limit numbers to 12..
Day 1. This comprises a morning in a local Scout Hut with an introductory talk, a caver training video and in the afternoon we visit Llanymynech Ogof, a mainly Roman copper mine. Since we have no caves in Shropshire, for the rest of the course we have a weekend in South Wales staying at a Scout Hut in the Swansea Valley.
Day 2. We visit Porth-Yr-Ogof and Bridge Cave, in the evening we try to arrange a guided tour of the Cave Rescue Depot.
Day 3. We visit the Top Entrance of Ogof Ffynnon Ddu, (OFD2). As this cave is a nature reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) it is ideal for discussing cave conservation issues.
In Shropshire we cover this with 2 weekends away, one in South Wales and one in the Peak District and another day trip.
The courses are open to those who have completed their Scout Caver Activity Badge (Don't worry you can still do it as an Explorer) and we limit numbers to 8.
During the first weekend we visit South Wales and start off with some ladder and abseiling through the avens in Porth yr Ogof, then on day 2 have a long trip in Ogof Ffynnon Ddu Bottom Entrance (OFD1).
The second weekend we will spend in the Peak District and visit Carlswark Cavern, Nicker Grove mine, Giants Cave or P8. Which sites we use will depend on the water conditions.
On a day trip to the Peak District we will visit a small cave in Winnats Pass which is ideal for the ladder rigging section of the badge.
